Concessional registration
Concessional registration offers a motor tax rebate for some vehicles.
What is the concession?
You will receive a 40% motor tax rebate if your vehicle meets the criteria for Interchangeable trailers or the farmer’s rebate. Or for 3 axle buses, the rebate is the difference in motor tax between a 3 axle bus and 2 axle bus.
What types of vehicles are eligible for concessional registration?
- Interchangeable trailers which are goods carrying semi-trailers, if you:
- only tow the trailer with a prime mover also registered in your name
- have less prime movers registered in your name than the number of semi-trailers
- will not be using the trailer for more than 20,000 kilometres over 12 months
- can keep records of your travel to confirm this.
- interchangeable trailers require ‘C number plates’
- The Farmers’ Rebate is available for a vehicle that:
- Is a rigid motor vehicle, prime mover or a heavy trailer that is designed to carry goods, and
- Is used for farming (such as dairy farming, pastoral farming or fruit growing) or horticulture, and
- Is solely used to transport produce or stock, or goods required for farming or horticulture, and
- Will not be used to carry on any trade, business, occupation or employment other than farming or horticulture, and
- Will not be hired out.
Note: Farm vehicles will require “C number plates” if their Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) or Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) is over 4.5 tonne.
- Buses with three axles; if
- their Gross Vehicle Mass is above 12 tonnes
- you will drive them for less than 60,000 kilometres over 12 months.
