Speed Management Strategy
The Road Safety Advisory Council is developing a Speed Management Strategy, supporting the Tasmanian Government’s road safety Towards Zero Action Plan 2020–2024, which aims to reduce the number of people being killed and seriously injured on our roads.
The Strategy focuses on making sure vehicles travel at safe and suitable speeds across Tasmania. Safe speeds help protect everyone, including people who are more at risk, like those walking, cycling, or riding motorcycles. Sometimes, keeping people safe means lowering speed limits. But in other cases, if the road is well-designed and safe, speed limits can stay the same or even increase.
Why speed matters
Vehicle travel speed plays a big role in crashes. It not only causes serious casualty crashes but also affects how badly people are hurt in a crash — even if speed wasn’t the main reason for the crash.
What is speed management?
Speed management means helping drivers travel at safe speeds by using different tools and techniques, such as road design, education and safer speed limits.
It’s based on the Safe System approach, which includes these key ideas:
- People make mistakes, and crashes happen.
- Our bodies are fragile and can’t handle high crash forces.
- Roads should be designed to protect us and reduce harm.
Consultation
The Road Safety Advisory Council ran a public consultation to help shape the Speed Management Strategy.
This consultation took place in November 2024.
You can read more about the consultation and what people said here.
The feedback is now being used to help develop the Strategy, which is expected to be finished in 2025.
