Working together for safer roads across Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government is developing the next Road Safety Strategy (the Strategy) to guide efforts to prevent deaths and serious injuries on Tasmanian roads from 2027.

Building on the achievements and lessons from previous strategies, as well as research and best-practice guidance, the Strategy will set a clear direction for improving safety for all road users across Tasmania.

1. Why we need a new road safety strategy?

Tasmania has made important progress in road safety over time. However, serious injuries and deaths on our roads remain unacceptably high.

The current Towards Zero Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026 is coming to an end and its target of reducing fatal and serious injuries to fewer than 200 per year has not yet been achieved. In 2025, 324 people were killed or seriously injured on Tasmanian roads.

Road safety challenges change over time. Shifts in travel patterns, advances in vehicle technology, population growth, and how Tasmanians move and interact with the transport network all influence safety outcomes. The Strategy is an opportunity to reset how we work together, consider the latest impacts and to improve road safety across the state.

Road trauma cannot be eliminated overnight, but sustained, coordinated action can significantly reduce harm over time. The aim of the Strategy is to support meaningful, lasting reductions in deaths and serious injuries by focusing effort where it can have the greatest impact, and by working differently with the community.

2. Our long-term vision?

The Strategy will continue Tasmania’s commitment to a Safe System approach, recognising that:

  • People make mistakes.
  • The human body has physical limits.
  • The road system should be designed and managed to accommodate these realities and minimise the consequence of crashes.

This approach aligns with the National Road Safety Strategy 2021–30, which sets a long-term vision that no one should be killed or seriously injured on Australia’s roads.

3. Consultation

Engaging stakeholders and the Tasmanian community is essential to ensuring the next Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy reflects community expectations and priorities.

In June 2026, regional stakeholder workshops were held in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart. More than 75 stakeholders attended, providing valuable feedback on proposed elements of the next Strategy.

Public consultation is expected to take place during August and September 2026, providing the wider Tasmanian community with an opportunity to have its say.

4. Stay informed

Information about how to get involved will be shared once the details are confirmed.
