Bass Highway - Christmas Hills Road to Deloraine

About the project

The Bass Highway – Christmas Hills Road to Deloraine project will improve safety and efficiency on the Bass Highway. The project aims to address the high-priority improvement opportunities identified for this location outlined in the Bass Highway Devonport to Launceston Corridor Strategy.

The improvements will include upgrades to the Christmas Hills Road and Griffins Road intersections, widening the road, installing median flexible safety barriers and improving signage and line markings. These upgrades will:

• increase safety for road users, including a reduced risk of head-on crashes and provide an opportunity for safe overtaking.
• improve efficiency and travel time reliability.

Timing

Detailed design for the project is now complete and we are progressing the approvals required before construction can begin. Construction is expected to start in early 2027.

Before construction starts, site preparation works will be undertaken between Ashford Road and Samuel Street. These works may include service relocations, investigations and surveys.

During this time, you may see workers and equipment in the area. Temporary traffic changes, including reduced speed limits and short-term lane closures, may also be required.

Please follow traffic signage and take care when travelling through the area.

Community consultation

Community consultation took place between May and July 2025, closing on Tuesday, 1 July 2025.

A big thank you to everyone who took part and shared their feedback with us.

The feedback received during the consultation will help inform the final design for the road upgrade.

New safety signs

As part of our ongoing commitment to road safety, new signage has been installed at the Christmas Hills Road intersection on the Bass Highway.

To improve driver awareness and reduce the risk of incidents, we installed larger ‘Give Way’ signs on Christmas Hills Road and new ‘Watch for Traffic Entering’ signs 300 metres before the intersection in both directions.

These measures aim to improve safety ahead of the planned major upgrade to the highway section, which is expected to begin in 2027.
