About the project
The Bass Highway – Christmas Hills Road to Deloraine project will improve safety and efficiency on the Bass Highway. The project aims to address the high-priority improvement opportunities identified for this location outlined in the Bass Highway Devonport to Launceston Corridor Strategy.
The improvements will include upgrades to the Christmas Hills Road and Griffins Road intersections, widening the road, installing median flexible safety barriers and improving signage and line markings. These upgrades will:
- increase safety for road users, including a reduced risk of head-on crashes and provide an opportunity for safe overtaking.
- improve efficiency and travel time reliability.
Timing
This project is in the detailed design phase. We are continuing to update the design and expect to publish the final detailed design in late 2026. We aim to start construction in early 2027.
We are continuing to engage with landowners impacted by land acquisition, easements, and changes to accesses and fencing while we finalise our design.
Community consultation
Community consultation took place between May and July 2025, closing on Tuesday, 1 July 2025.
A big thank you to everyone who took part and shared their feedback with us.
The feedback received during the consultation will help inform the final design for the road upgrade.

New safety signs
As part of our ongoing commitment to road safety, new signage has been installed at the Christmas Hills Road intersection on the Bass Highway.
To improve driver awareness and reduce the risk of incidents, we installed larger ‘Give Way’ signs on Christmas Hills Road and new ‘Watch for Traffic Entering’ signs 300 metres before the intersection in both directions.
These measures aim to improve safety ahead of the planned major upgrade to the highway section, which is expected to begin in 2027.
