About the project
The Bass Highway Parramatta Creek project is being delivered as part of the Bass Highway Devonport to Launceston 2023 Corridor Strategy to improve safety and efficiency on the Bass Highway.
The improvements will include widening the road, installing median flexible safety barriers and improving signage and line markings, which will:
- improve safety for all road users by reducing the chance of crashes and provide more opportunities to safely overtake vehicles
- improve efficiency of the network
- boost economic growth and development by improving connections for freight vehicles and all road users.
Timing
We are designing a concept for the upgrades. The concept design will be informed by community feedback from property owners and key stakeholders.
Location
The project covers a 12 km section of the Bass Highway located between Elizabeth Town and Sassafras, with most work between Dan Road and Smith and Others Road.
Funding
The Tasmanian Government committed to these upgrades in 2021. This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian governments.

Will my land be acquired as part of the upgrades?
We aim to minimise land acquisition on our projects, however sometimes we need to balance greater community benefit and safety against impacts of land acquisition.
The current concept design includes possible land acquisition. If your land may be impacted, we will contact you directly to discuss this further.
If we acquire your land, you will be compensated.

Will I be able to turn right on to the Bass Highway from my property?
To increase safety on the highway and reduce the chance of collisions, technical experts recommend limiting turns from properties to left turn only. This may require detours of varying lengths depending on your properties location. We understand this impacts your way of life, we will discuss this directly with impacted land holders. We are in the concept phase of this project and nothing has been finalised yet.
My access may be impacted, is my property access legal?
We can only consider legal accesses in the design process. The Bass Highway is a limited access road. This means that only so many accesses are legal to reduce the numbers of vehicles entering and exiting the highway along the 110 km/hr section of road. Some properties have multiple accesses, some are legal and others are illegal. For example, a gate on a boundary does not automatically guarantee a legal access.

Will there be any changes to the truck checking facility accesses?
No, the Bass Highway is a major freight route connecting Tasmania. Truck drivers are legally required to take regular breaks and check their loads. Providing regular sites to stop on the highway is important.
