About the project

This new HVDRA will help truck drivers take their required rest breaks and improve driver safety and fatigue management.

The Australian and Tasmanian governments are funding the construction of rest areas on Tasmania’s key freight routes as part of the Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area Strategy

We have worked closely with the Tasmanian Transport Association and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to identify suitable Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Areas.

The Detention River Heavy Vehicle Rest Area is located at the Detention River Store and will include three new truck parking bays for Hellyer bound traffic.

What are main benefits of this project?

Upgrading and formalising the existing rest area will provide a safe, well-designed space for heavy vehicle drivers to:

  • take mandatory rest breaks
  • reduce driver fatigue
  • check load safety.

Improved HVDRA facilities at key locations around Tasmania will:

  • improve safety for all road users
  • support efficient freight movement
  • prepare for future increased freight demand.

Timing

Site preparation work at the Detention River Heavy Vehicle Rest Area is planned to start in May 2026, with tree clearing in preparation for TasNetworks service relocations.

Construction work is expected to begin September 2026 and completion is expected by December 2026.
