About the project

We are planning a new Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area on the Bass Highway at Detention River.

The project is located at the Detention River Store and will include three new truck parking bays.

Efficient transport drives Tasmania’s economic development, and it's vital to provide our freight industry and heavy vehicle operators with safe, adequate, efficient rest areas.

These rest areas will offer safe spots for heavy vehicle operators travelling west to pull over, take breaks, rest, recharge, and check their loads.

The Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Strategy outlines the Tasmanian Government’s long-term approach to planning for and investing in facilities necessary for heavy vehicles to operate safely and legally on Tasmania’s key freight routes.

Timing

The project is currently in the detailed design phase, with construction expected to begin in late 2025.

Funding

The Tasmanian Government is funding the construction of rest areas to help heavy vehicle drivers easily take mandatory breaks on Tasmania’s key freight routes.
