About the project
We will be upgrading the existing informal rest area at Fossey River, Guildford, to better accommodate heavy vehicles.
We will be constructing a new toilet block with two all gender accessible toilets, a new shelter, and upgrading lighting.

Timing
We expect to start construction on Monday, 19 January 2026. Construction is expected to take up to six months, depending on the weather.
During construction, the Murchison Highway near the rest area will be reduced to a single lane of traffic at times, with traffic controllers operating during construction hours and timed traffic signals outside of construction hours.
Road users should keep to reduced speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs. Please allow for up to five minutes extra travel time.
Toilet closure
The existing toilets will be closed for the duration of the works to ensure the safety of construction workers and the public.
The closest alternate public toilets are located 10 minutes’ drive in Waratah or 30 minutes’ drive in Tullah. We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we get this work done.
Background
The Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Strategy was released in 2020 and outlines the Tasmanian Government’s long-term approach to planning for, and investing in, facilities necessary for heavy vehicles to operate safely and legally on Tasmania’s key freight routes.
We have been working closely with the Tasmanian Transport Association and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to ensure rest area sites meet the needs of the heavy vehicle industry.
