About the project

We are investigating the replacement of five aging timber bridges along Norfolk Road in Tasmania's North West to improve safety for road users and improve the lifespan of the bridges.

  • Savage River Bridge
  • Donaldson River Bridge
  • Guthrie Creek Bridge
  • Waratah Creek Bridge
  • Unnamed Creek Bridge on Norfolk Road

The project is currently in site investigations and concept design phase, which includes engineering surveys, geotechnical investigations, hydrological modelling, and environmental and heritage assessments at each site.

The aim of the project is to deliver modern, low-maintenance bridge structures that meet current safety standards and support long-term regional connectivity.

Timing

Investigative works are taking place from Monday, 17 November 2025 to Friday, 21 November 2025, and from Monday, 1 December 2025 to Friday, 5 December 2025. These works will help inform the concept designs for the project.

Norfolk Road will be closed between Blackwater Road/Rebecca Road and Corinna Road on Monday, 1 December 2025 and Tuesday, 2 December 2025, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm while we investigate Savage River Bridge.

Road users wishing to use Norfolk Road during this time must detour via Waratah Road, Murchison Highway (Guildford), Ridgley Highway, Bass Highway, Irishtown Road, Trowutta Road, and Blackwater Road to Norfolk Road. The total detour time is approximately 3 hours and 24 minutes.

Other disruptions may also occur during site investigations, including reduced speed limits, short-term traffic delays, survey activity and drilling works from the road reserve.

FAQs

What phase is the project currently in?

The project is currently in the site investigations and concept design phase, which includes engineering surveys, geotechnical investigations, hydrological modelling, and environmental and heritage assessments at each site. The concept design phase is expected to conclude in early 2026.

What will happen after the concept design phase?

Future phases are expected to start in 2026 and will include detailed design and construction, subject to approvals and funding.

Why are the bridges being replaced?

Replacing bridges helps fix aging infrastructure, improve flood protection, and allow heavy vehicles to use them safely. The Savage River Bridge has been damaged by floods and is restricted to vehicles under 5 tonnes, showing why replacement is needed.

Who will benefit from the bridge upgrades?

These upgrades will benefit freight operators, emergency services, local communities and tourists by improving access and reducing travel disruptions.

Will the bridge replacement works impact the environment or cultural heritage sites?

No. There will be no impacts to environment or cultural heritage as a result of the works.
