About the project

We are planning to expand the communications and closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems across North West Tasmania. This equipment will improve the safety and reliability of our road network by collecting real time-data about vehicle movement.

The project will take place across 19 locations in Burnie central business district and along the Bass Highway between Burnie and Cooee, shown in the map illustration below.

The project will involve:

  • expanding the optic fibre communications network within the greater Burnie area
  • designing and installing additional communication infrastructure in and around the Burnie area
  • installing additional CCTV cameras throughout the road network

The project will be completed in four stages. Stage one will involve installations within the Burnie central business district. Stages two, three, and four will be confirmed once funding has been approved.

The CCTV cameras will only monitor traffic flows and incidents. No personal information is collected through the cameras.

Timing

The project is expected to begin in early 2024. We are currently doing environmental tests to inform the project planning and design. You may see workers or vehicles in the area during this period. Further information will be published prior to the start of any works on the project.
