About the project
Currently, funding has been secured for upgrades to a 2.36 km section of Sheffield Main Road, between Reeves Road at Lower Barrington, and the Don River bridge. Upgrades to this section of Sheffield Main Road will be delivered first.
As part of the upgrades to this section, the intersection of Sheffield Road with Melrose Road and Gillams Road will be upgraded to include a right turn lane.
Other intersections between Reeves Road and Don River Bridge will receive one-metre-wide sealed shoulders.
Overall, this project will be delivered in two main stages once funding becomes available. These include:
- Sheffield Main Road North, which includes upgrades to Sheffield Main Road between Lower Barrington and South Spreyton
- Sheffield Main Road South, which includes upgrades to Sheffield Main Road between Lower Barrington and Sheffield.
Sheffield Main Road North has been divided into two sections, including:
- Sheffield Main Road - Reeves Road to Don River Bridge. Current project stage
- Sheffield Main Road - Don River Bridge to South Spreyton. This project will only proceed if funding becomes available.
Community consultation
Design and consultation for the Sheffield Main Road upgrades has been progressing since June 2021, with several pauses due to lack of available funding to proceed to construction.
Survey and investigations first occurred in 2021, with land acquisition surveys proceeding in early 2022. Initial discussions with landowners occurred at this time, including potential property impacts and likely accommodation works, however these discussions were paused indefinitely in late 2022.
In late 2024, funding was secured for the 2.36 km section from Reeves Road to the Don River Bridge. A design is almost completed for this section, however with funding now secured, all stakeholders are being engaged with again as the project is resuming.
In March 2025, all stakeholders in the sections from Don River Bridge to South Spreyton, and Lower Barrington to Sheffield were informed that the project is on hold, and they would be re-engaged once funding was secured.

Timing
The Reeves Road to Don River Bridge project is currently in the design phase, with construction expected to begin in late 2025.
We will be sharing the designs for the upgrades between Reeves Road and Don River Bridge with the community in May 2025.
Before construction begins, we will be meeting with property owners to discuss the project design and any potential impacts on nearby properties.
If more funding is secured in the future, stakeholders in the sections from Don River Bridge to South Spreyton, and Lower Barrington to Sheffield will be informed.
Funding
The Australian Government is providing $22 million towards the projects under the Road Safety Program, with the Tasmanian Government contributing $5.5 million.
