Batman Highway Upgrades

About the project

The Batman Highway road upgrades including road widening, shoulder sealing, and surface upgrades.

Widening and sealing shoulders provides a safe and efficient road and allows additional space for drivers to regain control, reducing road crashes.

Upgrades are happening in the following locations:

• Batman Highway, east of Batman Bridge (complete)
• Batman Highway, west of Batman Bridge (underway)

Timing

Batman Highway, east of Batman Bridge (complete)

The Batman Highway between Batman Bridge and the East Tamar Highway has been widened and sealed, with work completed in November 2021. Widening and sealing shoulders provides a safe and efficient road and allows additional space for drivers to regain control, reducing road crashes.

Batman Highway, west of Batman Bridge

Works started on the Batman Highway between the Batman Bridge and West Tamar Highway in February 2022 and should be finished by winter 2024.

Current situation

We are widening and sealing the road shoulders, west of the Batman Bridge to the West Tamar Highway.

Work started in February 2022 but has been delayed due to issues relating to the relocation of power poles and an underground cable. These delays were further impacted by bad weather.

Contractors are back on site working and we now expect works on the Batman Highway to be completed by winter 2024, weather permitting.

There is a reduced speed limit and lane closures in place, please allow up to eight minutes extra travel time.

About the Northern Roads Package

Northern Roads Package stage one is a series of road upgrades including road widening, shoulder sealing, and surface upgrades, planned for key interregional freight linkages through the Batman Highway, Birralee Road, and Frankford Road.

Upgrades are planned in the following locations:

• Batman Highway, east of Batman Bridge (complete)
• Batman Highway, west of Batman Bridge (underway)
• Birralee Road, Roxford Avenue to Brushy Rivulet (underway)
• Birralee Road, Brushy Rivulet to Frankford Road (design)
• Frankford Road, Birralee Road to Stony Brook, Exeter (design)
