Birralee Road Upgrades
We will be widening, shoulder sealing and upgrading the surface of Birralee Road as part of the Northern Roads Package.
About the project
Widening and sealing shoulders provides a safe and efficient road and allows additional space for drivers to regain control, reducing road crashes.
The Birralee Road Upgrades project has been split into three sections:
- Birralee Road, Roxford Avenue to Brushy Rivulet (complete).
- Birralee Road, Brushy Rivulet to Priestleys Lane (design)
- 2a. Birralee Road, sections north of Brushy Rivulet to Frankford Road junction (preconstruction). - Birralee Road, Priestleys Lane to Frankford Road junction (design).
Timing
Work on the remaining section of Birralee Road from Brushy Rivulet to Frankford Road junction will be completed in separate packages.
The first package of work to go to construction will be between 744 Birralee Road and the previously upgraded section of Birralee Road at Black Sugarloaf Creek. The intersection of Selbourne Road will not be included in this package.
This section of Birralee Road has been prioritised as property acquisition and TasNetworks relocations are not required.
We plan to advertise the tender for these works in late April 2026.
We will continue to finalise the design, TasNetworks Easement Agreements, and property acquisition for the remaining sections of Birralee Road.
Location
Community consultation
We are continuing to engage with landowners along Birralee Road and Frankford Road. Our aim is to minimise any land acquisition and reduce changes to existing property boundaries wherever possible. As the design progresses, we will maintain ongoing consultation with affected landowners to ensure they remain informed and supported throughout the process.
About the Northern Roads Package
Northern Roads Package stage one is a series of road upgrades including road widening, shoulder sealing, and surface upgrades, planned for key interregional freight linkages through the Batman Highway, Birralee Road, and Frankford Road.
Upgrades are planned in the following locations:
- Batman Highway, east of Batman Bridge (complete)
- Batman Highway, west of Batman Bridge (complete)
- Birralee Road, Roxford Avenue to Brushy Rivulet (complete)
- Birralee Road, Brushy Rivulet to Frankford Road (design)
- Birralee Road, sections north of Brushy Rivulet to Frankford Road junction (preconstruction)
- Frankford Road, Birralee Road to Stony Brook, Exeter (design)
