About the project
We are planning to construct a new Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area (HVDRA) on Crown Land off Bridport Road, near the East Tamar Highway junction.
The East Tamar Highway site was identified by the Heavy Vehicle Industry as a priority location servicing the Devonport to Bell Bay freight corridor and broader northern Tasmania freight network
The HVDRA will provide a safe location for heavy vehicle drivers to check load security, rest and revive, while adding to road safety benefits.
The site selected for the HVDRA will accommodate parking for five heavy vehicles, providing drivers with toilets, water, lighting and shelter. The site will also include safe turning lanes and a new entrance onto the Lauriston Park access road.
Timing
Detailed design has now been completed in consultation with George Town Council and neighbouring landowners, and construction is expected to begin in 2027. We will keep the community updated as the project progresses.
Background
The East Tamar Highway Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area (HVDRA) forms part of the Tasmanian Government’s implementation of the Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area Strategy (2020), which builds on the Integrated Freight Strategy for Tasmania.
The Strategy identified the need for improved rest area infrastructure along key freight routes to support:
- safe and compliant driver fatigue management
- improved road safety outcomes
- more efficient freight movement across the network
The East Tamar Highway site, located near the junction with Bridport Road, was identified as a priority location servicing the Devonport to Bell Bay freight corridor and broader northern Tasmania freight network.
