About the project
Frankford Road connects Devonport to the West Tamar Highway at Exeter. It is a regional road through hilly, forested terrain.
We will be realigning a sharp reverse curve on Frankford Road to improve safety for all road users, including heavy vehicles, motorcycles and cyclists.
The need for a road realignment and shoulder sealing has been identified as a priority safety improvement.
This map shows the section of Frankford Road where we will be realigning the sharp curve.
Timing
We will be performing investigations onsite to inform the design between Monday, 29 September 2025 and Friday, 3 October 2025.
We will be working between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. There will be a reduced speed limit and occasional lane closures during working hours.
This project is currently in the development phase, which will be completed by mid-2026.
FAQs
What work is planned?
We are realigning a sharp curve on Frankford Road, Frankford, approximately 500m east of Beasley Road to improve safety for all road users. The safety upgrades will include:
- road realignment and shoulder sealing.
- associated drainage and safety improvements.
- accommodation work for affected properties (e.g. fencing and access adjustments).
Why is this curve being realigned?
This section of Frankford Road has recorded 14 crashes in the past five years, including four serious injuries and six minor injuries. In response, we installed 45 km/h advisory speed signs and are in the planning phase of this project to improve safety for road users on the curve
What are the project benefits?
The Frankford Road Curve Realignment project aims to address the high number of crashes, through safety upgrades. These upgrades aim to improve the experience of driving on the road, by smoothing out the sharp reverse curve.
The realignment will provide better visibility, safer geometry, and improved conditions for all road users, including freight operators, tourists, and motorcyclists.
What are the project timeframes?
- Late 2025: Geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations
- Late 2026: advertisement of construction tender
- Early 2027: Expected start of work
- Late 2027: works scheduled for completion
Will any vegetation be removed?
Yes, limited vegetation will be removed within the project site to improve sight distances. Environmental assessments have been performed, and no threatened species have been identified in the works zone. We will also investigate opportunities to rehabilitate land and reinstate vegetation on areas where the old road alignment runs.
Will landowners be affected?
We are currently engaging with landowners who will be directly impacted by the realignment.
Funding
The Tasmanian Government has committed $4.2 million for both design and construction of this project.
