About the project
We are strengthening and resurfacing the Kings Bridge located on Bridge Road, between Launceston and Trevallyn.
Before resurfacing work begins, the bridge needs to be strengthened. This work will also include replacing the existing inner lane barriers and painting the façade.
Timing
We will be carrying out more investigations at night on Kings Bridge. These night works will be from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm, weather permitting and will have a reduced speed limit and single lane closures.
There will also be monthly inspections on the second Wednesday of each month to monitor the load limit, while strengthening investigations will continue. The dates of these works are below. If poor weather causes the monthly inspections to be cancelled, works will be completed on the second Thursday of each month.
- Wednesday, 11 February 2026.
- Monday, 16 February to Wednesday, 18 February 2026.
- Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

Change to bridge load limit
A recent structural assessment found that a reduced load limit is required. This is to help preserve the life of the bridge, and the bridge remains safe for use.
The load limit on Kings Bridge, Trevallyn, is now 20 tonnes. Heavy Vehicles over 20 tonnes must seek an alternate route, such as the West Tamar Highway. There are signs at the bridge to notify road users of the new load limit.
We are investigating strengthening options that could lift the 20-tonne load limit. We will share this information with the community once confirmed.
The load limit has been in place since Monday, 1 December 2025.
Location
Kings Bridge is located on Bridge Road, Trevallyn, over the South Esk River. Kings Bridge is over a century old and is a recognisable historic landmark in the Launceston area.
