We are upgrading barriers at six locations along Olivers Road, between Mersey Forest Road and Cethana Road.

This route is a social and commercial connection for the communities of Liena, Cethana, and Gowrie Park, as well as a key corridor for businesses and tourists.

The upgrades will improve road safety by replacing outdated post-and-cable fencing that no longer meets Australian Safety Standards with modern safety barriers. This project will also include additional barriers on the approaches to the Mersey River bridge.

How were the sites identified?

In 2023, a road safety audit by the department under the Black Spot Program identified that sections of post-and-cable fencing along Olivers Tourist Road, while enhancing delineation, no longer meet current Australian Safety Standards due to their age and outdated design.

Timing

We will be working from Monday, 5 January to Friday, 27 February 2026, weather permitting. Work will be done from Monday to Friday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. There may be occasional work on Saturdays and Sundays if required.

Our current program of work is going to be completed in two sections of Olivers Road.

  • We will be working on Olivers Road in Mount Roland, between Cockatoo Road and Cethana Road, from Wednesday, 7 January 2026 to Wednesday, 4 February 2026.
  • We will be working on Olivers Road, between the Mersey River and Lemonthyme Road, from Thursday, 5 February to Friday, 20 February 2026.

Traffic impacts

During construction, there will be temporary traffic changes including lane closures and reduced speed limits which may affect travel times. Motorists should allow up to 15 minutes extra travel time during this work. Please keep to the speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.

Funding

This project is funded by the Tasmanian Government and Australian Government, through the Black Spot Program for approximately $500,000.
