About the project

The department is further investigating options to improve the safety and efficiency of the West Tamar Highway for all road users between Trevallyn and Riverside.

The following areas have been identified as of interest and options to improve these will be investigated:

  • Duplication of the single lane section of the West Tamar Highway between 101 West Tamar Highway and the intersection of Forest Road (northern intersection) / West Tamar Highway (approximately 710 metres long), locally known as Barnes Hill.
  • Improvements to pedestrian crossing facilities at the Ecclestone Road / West Tamar Highway intersection.
  • Improvements to turning facilities and line-marking at the Riverview Road / West Tamar Highway intersection.
  • Improvements to the Forest Road/ West Tamar Highway intersections to improve sight distance.
  • Improvements for shared path between Tailrace Park to Windsor Park.
  • Improvements to the signalised pedestrian crossing at the Orana Place/ West Tamar Highway intersection.
  • Investigations for additional pedestrian crossings between the West Tamar Rowing Club and Cormiston Road

Community consultation

Once the investigations are complete, the department will use the information gathered to prepare concept designs which will be shared with the community for feedback.

Timing

We are developing designs for the these identified projects between Trevallyn and Riverside. During 2025, we will be sharing the concept designs for these projects with the community and key stakeholders.

Funding

The proposed projects are funded from a $20 million commitment by the Tasmanian Government for the  West Tamar Highway targeted upgrades between Exeter and Launceston.
