About the project
The Australian and Tasmanian governments are funding the construction of rest areas on Tasmania’s key freight routes as part of the Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area Strategy.
The Department of State Growth has worked closely with the Tasmanian Transport Association and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to identify suitable Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Areas.
The Bass Highway, between Westbury and Deloraine, was identified as a high priority site to improve driver safety for all road users.
Designs have been developed in consultation with the Tasmanian Transport Association and landowners where properties will be impacted.
Planned work
We are building new east and westbound rest area sites along the Bass Highway, west of Westbury.
The rest areas will include capacity for up to 15 heavy vehicles to cater for current and future demand for freight on the Bass Highway.
Each rest area will include toilets, bins, shelters and lighting.
A deceleration and slip lane will be installed to provide access to the rest areas for heavy vehicles.
Timing
We are building a Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area eastbound on the Bass Highway (heading towards Launceston), between Exton and Hagley.
Construction began on on Wednesday, 17 September 2025. We will be working between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. There will be lane closures and reduced speed limits.
Please allow up to 15 minutes extra travel time, keep to speed limits, and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.
For further information regarding construction please contact the project team on 0497 387 017 or email HVDRA-upgrade@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
Construction for the westbound site will start in early 2026.
Funding
The Australian Government is providing $9.6 million through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, with the Tasmanian Government providing $2.4 million towards the $12 million projects.
