About the project
Building Tasmania is assessing bus stop infrastructure along the Arthur Highway, East Derwent Highway and Tasman Highway corridors to improve access to public transport for people with disability, older Tasmanians, and those with different transport needs.
The project will assess 124 existing bus stops to better understand current conditions and identify upgrades that could improve accessibility and passenger experience. The assessment includes:
- 35 bus stops along the Arthur Highway between Forcett and Port Arthur
- 53 bus stops along the East Derwent Highway between Rose Bay and Bridgewater
- 36 bus stops along the Tasman Highway between Orford and Scottsdale.
Improved accessibility can help reduce barriers to community participation, improve the passenger experience and support increased use of public transport.
Timing
The project is currently in the scoping phase. This phase involves site investigations, surveys and assessments to identify accessibility issues and understand what improvements may be required at each bus stop. The project team will also consider the order in which bus stops may be prioritised for future upgrades.
No decisions have been made about future upgrades at individual locations. The current phase focuses on gathering information and assessing options only.
Bus stops will remain open while assessments are being done. Site investigations will involve visual inspections and survey work and are not expected to affect bus services.
We will be communicating with transport and community based stakeholders to gain feedback about community needs, usage and improvement opportunities at the bus stops in the highway corridors.
Subject to funding, approvals and program requirements, it is expected that we will progress priority sites into future design and delivery phases in 2027.
