About the project
The River Derwent Ferry service between Bellerive and Sullivan’s Cove has been a great success with more than 500 passengers a day choosing to cross the River Derwent by ferry.
The upgrades will enhance the passenger experience and encourage more people to use active transport. The new terminal will include:
- all weather shelters with seating at the port and terminal
- secure, weather-proof bicycle parking
- digital information screens to display the ferry timetable.
Feedback we received during consultation on the River Derwent Ferry Masterplan has been considered in creating the design for an improved ferry terminal at Bellerive. We will use this design for future River Derwent ferry terminals.

Designs have been finalised and here is a render of what the new ferry terminal will look like.

River Derwent Ferry Service expansion
In addition to the planned improvements to the Bellerive Ferry Terminal, the Tasmanian Government has committed to build on the popularity and success of the existing Bellerive to Hobart service by expanding the River Derwent Ferry Service to other locations in greater Hobart under a River Derwent Ferry Masterplan.
The design for the Bellerive Ferry Terminal will be used at all new sites subject to local approvals.
