About the project

We are building a new roundabout on the Channel Highway at Huntingfield.

The revised design for this roundabout includes a northbound slip lane connecting the Channel Highway with the Kingston Bypass.

This project supports Homes Tasmania’s Huntingfield Land Release project.

Timing

We started construction on the roundabout in April 2023. We expect to complete the works by May 2024.

Traffic impacts

We will be working Mondays to Saturdays between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

During construction there will be temporary traffic changes and motorists should allow up to eight minutes extra travel time.

1Frequently Asked Questions

What is being built on the Channel Highway at Huntingfield?

We are building a new roundabout and northbound (Kingston bound) slip lane.

Why is a roundabout being built on the highway?

We are building the roundabout to provide access to land being developed by Homes Tasmania to provide residential affordable housing lots.

I want to use the Kingston Bypass. Will I have to use this roundabout?

No. Traffic on the Channel Highway wanting to use the Kingston Bypass will be able to use the northbound slip lane, and will not need to use the roundabout.

When did work begin?

Work started in 2023.

How long will it take for the roundabout and slip lane to be built?

We expected to finish by May 2024, weather permitting.

What days and times will the work take place?

We will be working Monday to Saturday, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, weather permitting.

Will there be delays during the work?

Yes. During work, for everyone’s safety, there will be reduced speed limits. We suggest allowing an extra eight minutes travel time.

Will blasting be required?

Yes. To build the slip lane, we need to do some blasting work.

During a blast, we suggest allowing for an extra 30 minutes travel time, or avoid using the highway between Margate and Kingston during the scheduled day and time.

How will I know when a blast is happening?

We will update our project webpage with the blasting schedule and post this information on the RoadTas Facebook page. We will also share this information with Kingborough Council, and transport and tourism groups.

The online Tasmanian Roadwork Map also has the latest information on possible delays, and you can also download the TrafficTas app to your smart device.

Will I always drive on the Channel Highway during the work?

Not always. When the roundabout is being built, road users will drive on temporary lanes.

Road markings, signage and traffic control will guide road users to the temporary lanes.

Once the roundabout is finished, traffic will then be switched back to using the Channel Highway.

How will cyclists use the new roundabout and slip lane?

We have included a two-metre sealed shoulder on the slip lane for riders cycling north towards Hobart. Riders cycling north will not need to use the roundabout.

For riders cycling south towards Margate, a shared path alongside the Channel Highway and before the roundabout, will be available. Cyclists riding south will also cross the new road into the Homes Tasmania subdivision. A refuge in the traffic island in this location will support crossing this new road.
