About the project

We are building a new link road between the Huon Highway and Flood Road.

The link road will divert Cygnet-bound highway traffic from Main Street Huonville. It will reduce congestion and improve safety through Huonville town centre.

We are now in the construction phase of the Huon Link Road, to improve the road network and travel times for users heading south of Huonville.

Tree works - April 2024

We are preparing to start tree trimming and removal works along Flood Road, from Sale Street to the Channel Highway.

The tree trimming and removal works will start from Monday, 22 April 2024 and will take approximately three days.

This work will allow TasNetworks to install power poles with the required tree clearance to the wires.

Clearing has been minimised to reduce the impact on native vegetation.  Where possible, large Eucalypt trees have been retained, and safety barriers will be installed to protect motorists.

Constructing Huon Link Road

This is a new road bypassing the town centre of Huonville. This greenfield development starts near the junction of Orchard Avenue / the Huon Highway and connects with Flood Road near the corner of Sale Street. Roundabouts are being constructed at the Orchard Avenue / Huon Highway junction, and at the intersection with Sale Street / Knights Road.

Upgrading Flood Road, from Sale Street to the Channel Highway

This includes widening the road using the government’s road reserve, providing new property accesses, fencing and structures where required, and removing vegetation.

Community consultation

In 2021 and 2022, the community and key stakeholders provided feedback on two options for the Link Road – a Northern Route and a Southern Route.

Based on the community’s feedback, and supported by expert engineering and environmental assessments, the Northern Route was chosen as the preferred alignment.

Impacted landowners have been identified and engaged with all throughout the design of this project, and the appropriate documentation has been issued to prepare for construction.

Timing

We expect to complete the work by 20 December 2024, weather permitting.

We will be working between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday, and 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, as required. We will let you know if we need to work outside these times.

The Huon Link Road will not be operational until construction of the entire project is finished, which includes upgrading Flood Road.

We expect the new link road to open in early 2025.

Funding

This project is funded by the Tasmanian and Australian governments.
