Kingston DDA Compliant Bus Stop Project
We are upgrading high-use bus stops in the Kingborough municipality to improve accessibility and comfort for people using public transport.
This project is part of the Kingston Congestion Package (a Kingston-specific initiative of the Hobart City Deal). In 2023, a bus stop audit and stakeholder consultation was completed. As a result, 50 bus stops were selected to be upgraded based on their usage and location.
From this audit of 90 stops, 17 priority bus stops in the Kingborough municipality were selected to be upgraded in the first stage of the project. Consideration was also given to feedback received from Metro Tasmania and Kingborough Council.
To comply with accessibility standards as defined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), compliance and accessibility were assessed at each stop and recommendations for improvement were made.
The first two stages of the project have now been completed, with 37 priority bus stops now upgraded in the Kingston area.
Stage 3 of the project will deliver 52 more bus stops.
The project is delivering:
The first stage of the Kingston DDA bus stop project successfully upgraded 17 bus stops in the Kingston area. The upgraded stops from stage one are included below.
We consulted with nearby landowners and stakeholders through the concept design stages.
Feedback from Metro Tasmania and the Kingborough Council was also considered.
The design has been completed, with construction underway.
This map shows the locations of the bus stops that will be improved under the project.
The Tasmanian Government has committed $10 million over the next four years to provide all-access, all-weather bus stops at priority locations across the state. Funding for the project was delivered via a grant-style program.
The project is part of the Kingston Congestion Package, a Kingston-specific initiative of the Hobart City Deal.

Timing – Construction for Tranche 2 is complete, and Tranche 3 construction is expected to start in January 2026.
If construction works impact or cause the closure of a bus stop location, information will be provided to the community about restrictions to the bus stop and alternative bus stops available to users.
The first two stages of the project have now been completed, with 37 priority bus stops now upgraded in the Kingston area.
Stage 3 of the project will deliver 52 more bus stops.
This project will follow the Tasmanian State Road Traffic Noise Management Guidelines (2015). The work will involve the use of machinery which generates some noise. We will make every effort to minimise noise by arranging the work in stages at different locations and turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use.
There is no land acquisition required for this project.
We will be working from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. There will be minimal impact to pedestrians and road users during this time. Traffic management and reduced speed limit signs may be in place during construction to ensure the safety of workers and road users.
