About the project

We are upgrading high-use bus stops within the Kingborough municipality to help improve accessibility for the community.

The project is part of the Kingston Congestion Package (a Kingston-specific initiative of the Hobart City Deal). The audit looked at 90 bus stops, selected based on their usage and location. Consideration was also given to feedback received from Metro Tasmania and Kingborough Council.

To comply with accessibility standards as defined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), compliance and accessibility were assessed at each stop and recommendations for improvement were made. The design process has now been completed with construction to begin in March 2024.

The first stage of the project will include upgrading 17 priority bus stops in the Kingston area.

The project will deliver:

  • improved comfort and safety of passengers waiting to board public transport
  • improved accessibility by upgrading the bus stops to be DDA compliant.

1Bus stop upgrade schedule

Stop number 143, Roslyn Avenue and Mirramar Park, Kingston

This bus stop on Roslyn Avenue will be closed from Monday, 15 April 2024 until Friday, 19 April 2024.

The replacement temporary bus stop will be located 20 metres away from the bus stop works, closer to Powell Road.

This section will be upgraded as scheduled bus stop upgrade dates are confirmed.

2Completed bus stop upgrades

Stop 30, Channel Highway and Orana Place, Taroona

This bus stop was closed from Tuesday, 2 April 2024 until Monday, 8 April 2024. While these upgrade works occurred, bus stops 31 (opposite Illawong Crescent) and 29 (near Churchill Road) along Channel Highway were used instead.

3Community consultation

We consulted with nearby landowners and stakeholders through the concept design stages.

Feedback from Metro Tasmania and the Kingborough Council was also considered.

The design has been completed, with construction due to start in March 2024.

5Timing

We are working from Monday to Friday between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, to the end of July 2024, weather permitting.

There will be some temporary traffic changes with a reduced speed limit of 40km/h. Traffic management will be in place to ensure the safety of workers and road users.

6FAQs

Will there be impacts to the bus stop locations or timetables during construction?

If construction works impact or cause the closure of a bus stop location, information will be provided to the community about restrictions to the bus stop and alternative bus stops available to users.

How far has the project progressed?

The design process has been completed with the construction phase to begin next.

Construction for the first 17 bus stops began in March 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of July 2024.

Will there be noise impacts when construction begins?

This project will follow the Tasmanian State Road Traffic Noise Management Guidelines (2015). The work will involve the use of machinery which generates some noise. We will make every effort to minimise noise by arranging the work in stages at different locations and turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use.

Will the project require land acquisition?

There is no land acquisition required for this project.

Will there be any impacts to pedestrians or road users during construction?

We will be working from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. There will be minimal impact to pedestrians and road users during this time. Traffic management and reduced speed limit signs may be in place during construction to ensure the safety of workers and road users.
