About the project
We carry out regular inspections on our roads and highways to maintain a safe and efficient road network.
This work may require reduced speed limits and temporary lane closures to keep workers and road users safe.
1. Construction phase projects
Boyer Road
We will be strengthening the bank of the River Derwent on Boyer Road, east of New Norfolk. This upgrade will improve long-term road durability. This work will also prevent bank erosion.
Construction will start along Boyer Road, New Norfolk at Derbyshire Cliffs near Pulpit Rock Lookout on Monday, 19 January 2026, and we expect to complete the work in March 2026.
We will be working between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, and occasionally on Saturdays. We will let you know if we need to work outside these times.
During construction, Boyer Road east of New Norfolk, will be reduced to a single lane of traffic, with traffic controllers operating during construction hours and timed traffic signals outside of construction hours.
Reduced speed limits will be in place, please follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs. Please allow up to 15 minutes extra travel time.
Location

Heavy vehicle access
General Access heavy vehicles and restricted access vehicles which do not exceed three metres width can continue to travel through the site.
All other heavy vehicles will need to find an alternate route. For heavy vehicle access enquiries, contact information is available online here: www.transport.tas.gov.au/contact_us/heavy_vehicle_contacts
Projects
The six sites shown in the below map have progressed to land stability projects which we will deliver.
We will provide more information on these soon.

We have finished our investigations at the following sites:
- Glen Huon Road
- Tasman Highway near Weldborough Pass – two sites
- Lyell Highway, West of Derwent Bridge (Mt Arrowsmith) – two sites
- Boyer Road, near Derbyshire Cliffs (Pulpit Rock Road)
The information we gathered will help to inform the design to improve the land stability at each site.
We are planning to start repairs at Weldborough Pass on the Tasman Highway and Boyer Road.
The repairs at the remaining sites on the Lyell Highway will be planned once the design options have been reviewed and chosen.
Funding
This project is funded by the Tasmanian Government.
