About the project
We are repairing and strengthening the bridge over the Lyell Highway culvert located between Granton and New Norfolk.
This work will make the bridge stronger so it can continue to support vehicles carrying heavy loads into the future.
Timing
Work has begun on strengthening the culvert on the Lyell Highway, with workers working underneath the bridge and not visible from the road.
The lower speed limit was needed to allow the materials to set properly, as they require minimal vibrations from vehicles.
We have completed the initial maintenance and will now pack up the site for winter. The speed limit will be returned to 100 km/h by the end of next week.
We will return to complete the remaining work in October 2025, which will take about a month to complete.
While speed limits are often reduced for the safety of roadworkers, they can also be reduced for many other reasons, that may not always be visible. This can include changed road conditions, workers under or near the road, removed or damaged barriers or, in this case, to ensure a long-lasting outcome.
