About the project
In September 2024 there was a landslip on the Lyell Highway between Hayes and Rosegarland next to the Timtumilli Minanya/River Derwent due to flooding of the river.
Since the landslip, the highway has been reduced to a single lane. This section of the highway is safe to travel on and we have been doing site investigations to develop the design for the repair work here. The repairs will create long term stability of the road and the roadside.
Timing
Construction began in late August 2025 and is expected to be completed in December 2025. We are working 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, with possible work on Saturdays.
The single lane closure and other traffic management will remain in place for the safety of road users 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If there are any changes to the traffic management we will let you know.
Traffic impacts
The single lane closure and other traffic management will remain in place for the safety of road users 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If there are any changes to the traffic management we will let you know. We will be extending the existing lane closure further south to provide enough room for site access and set up. This is a complex project, and traffic management may need to change with limited notice.
Please allow about 15 minutes extra travel time when travelling through this area.

FAQs
Why is construction starting now?
Landslide repairs are complex. We performed extensive investigations and assessments to determine the safety of the site and assess the damage to the hillside and road. We engaged specialists from Tasmania and across Australia to ensure the right people with the right knowledge were working on this project. We experienced some delays in performing investigations due to bad weather and river levels.
Who has been engaged?
We have been engaging with impacted stakeholders and community groups throughout the design phase of the project. We will be working closely with stakeholders throughout the construction and repair of the landslide and will ensure everyone in the community is kept up to date and informed of any changes.
Heavy vehicles and oversized overmass Vehicles
Existing traffic management on site may restrict access to oversized overmass vehicles travelling through the site.
For more information about heavy vehicle access please contact our stakeholder engagement consultant below or view the heavy vehicle access webpage here.
You may need to seek advice about load limits on detour routes to ensure your safe and accessible passage.
Is the site safe for road and river users?
We have performed significant investigations to assess the stability of the landslip, and the site is currently safe. We are committed to the safety of road and river users and have implemented traffic management to secure the site. We will continually monitor the site throughout construction to maintain its safety.
Why are you clearing vegetation?
We will be clearing vegetation on site, to provide safe access to repair the landslip. We are clearing as little as possible while also ensuring the safety of our road workers.
Can I use the river?
River users are advised to avoid the base of the landslip to provide space for us to work safely.
Can I still fish in the area?
Yes, you can still fish in the area, but please obey traffic management and contact Inland Fisheries Tasmania and/or MAST for more information.
