About the project

Work is needed to preserve the Richmond Bridge for future generations and to proactively improve its overall management to prevent any future issues. Monitoring and maintaining the structural integrity of the bridge is essential for its ongoing long-term operation.

Work is being completed in two stages.

Stage 1 includes:

  • upgrading the monitoring system, which includes replacing the existing vibration monitors on the bridge
  • waterproofing the pedestrian footpaths
  • removing the poplar trees that are growing close to the bridge

Stage 2 includes:

  • rebuilding of the retaining wall on the north-east (school side) of the bridge

This work is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian governments.  This project received grant funding from the Australian Government through the Australian Heritage Grants Program.

1Location

The heritage listed Richmond Bridge is located in Richmond, 25 kilometres north of Hobart.

2Timing

Stage 1 started on Monday, 1 May 2023.

Working hours were 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday, weather permitting.

Stage 1 was completed in June 2023.

The start date for Stage 2 will be advised at a later date.

3Traffic changes

During this work, there will be some temporary traffic changes to ensure workers and road users are safe.

Motorists using the Richmond Bridge should prepare for temporary lane closures, reduced speed limits and traffic delays of up to 8 minutes during working times. Motorists are reminded to drive to the conditions and follow any signs and instructions given by construction and traffic control staff.

Traffic controllers will be used during working hours and school traffic will be prioritised during drop-off and pick-up times.

During the work, there will be reduced access to pedestrian footpaths on and around the Richmond Bridge as the sensors need to be installed under the existing footpath on the northern sides of the bridge and waterproofing will be installed under both pedestrian footpaths on the bridge. One footpath will remain open during work to allow for pedestrian access.

There will be reduced parking near the work area during working hours to allow for contractor vehicles to be parked near the work site.
