About the project

We are:

  • replacing two bridges crossing the Styx River on Gordon River Road in Glenora and Bushy Park
  • strengthening the bridge crossing the River Derwent on Gordon River Road.

By replacing these bridges, we are ensuring both Styx River Bridges are suitable for operation for the next 100 years.

Other project benefits include:

  • allowing for greater freight productivity and access
  • improving network reliability
  • providing a separated pedestrian path over the Styx River Bridge at Glenora
  • providing an improved road width on both bridges on the Styx River for heavy vehicles and cyclists
  • improving road safety for all road users.

Timing

Work is scheduled to start from Wednesday, 7 February 2024. We expect to complete work on all three bridges by April 2025.

Once works start, we will be working between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

We will let you know if we need to work outside these times.

Project Location

All three bridges are located on Gordon River Road in Tasmania’s south. Gordon River Road is 119 km long and runs from the Lyell Highway to the Gordon River Dam.

Traffic changes

During these works, there will be some temporary traffic changes to keep workers and road users safe.

The replacement Styx River Bridge at Bushy Park will be built on a new alignment. The current bridge will remain open during construction of the new bridge and will be removed once the new bridge is in use.

A reduced speed limit will be in place during construction of the new bridge and demolition and removal of the existing bridge to ensure the safety of our workers.

The current Styx River Bridge at Glenora will be demolished and removed, and a replacement bridge built in its place. During these works, a single lane temporary bridge will be installed next to the current bridge. North-bound traffic will need to give way to south-bound traffic, and only cross the bridge when safe to do so.

The current give way arrangement on the single-lane Derwent River Bridge at Macquarie Plains (where east-bound traffic gives way to west-bound traffic) will not change during or after the works. A reduced speed limit will be in place to keep workers safe.

Please allow an extra 15 minutes when travelling through this area.
