The Tasmanian Government is funding the expansion of the Travel Time System across Tasmania, which will provide anonymous data to the Tasmanian Traffic Management Centre improving the ability to manage traffic congestion and support incident response across the Tasmanian Road network .

What is it?
The Travel Time Information System (TTIS) provides anonymous data to the Tasmanian Traffic Management Centre improving the ability to manage traffic congestion and support incident response across the Tasmanian Road Network.
How does it work?
A network of roadside devices (detection stations) anonymously detects wireless signals (typically Bluetooth or Wi-Fi) in vehicles that pass the station. Each device that is detected has a unique address that is encrypted and anonymised before processing.
What are the detection stations monitoring?
The detection stations allow the TTIS to evaluate actual travel times around the road network, allowing road managers to better understand travel conditions, patterns and identify when traffic is not moving as expected. By analysing large quantities of data, patterns emerge, and certain traffic conditions can be identified. The Data is also used to support the Departments “TrafficTas” Mobile Application.
How is the data used?
The Department of State Growth will be using the travel time data to assist in the management of the road network, including identification of crashes and breakdowns, unusual congestion, management of traffic signals and in planning for improvements to the transport network. This provides real-time situational awareness to provide faster response to incidents and reduction of delays to road users.
Are individuals identifiable?
No. All data is anonymous. No personally identifiable information is collected or retained by the Department in the course of these routine surveys.
Do the detection stations produce harmful radiation?
No. The units are primarily receiver units, detecting the presence of certain devices. The detection devices use the same technology available on any smartphone.
Will the travel time data be available to the public?
Data collected from roadside devices is used to support the Departments “TrafficTas” Mobile Application which is available to the public.
