About the project

The Ridgley Highway is a key transport link between the north-west and west coast region, connecting Burnie and the Murchison Highway, which is vital for mining, forestry and tourism.

We are committed to improving safety on the Ridgley Highway to meet the current and future needs of local communities and to support economic growth.

The vision for the Ridgley Highway between Burnie and Guildford over the next 20 years is to provide a safe, efficient, reliable, and consistent road environment for all road users.

This includes improving road safety outcomes by providing increased overtaking opportunities, key intersection

upgrades, road surface improvements, heavy vehicle driver rest areas, and active transport (walking and cycling) and public transport improvements.

We created the Ridgley Highway Corridor Strategy to:

  • identify the current road conditions along the highway between Mount Street at Burnie and the Murchison Highway at Guildford
  • improve efficiency, reliability and resilience by providing a consistent driving experience for all road users
  • prioritise locations for future improvements and upgrades.

Improvement opportunities

Based on the findings in the corridor strategy, improvement opportunities include:

  • passing opportunities including climbing lanes to improve travel time reliability and safe overtaking opportunities
  • intersection improvements including left and right turn treatments for turning vehicles, particularly larger vehicles
  • road widening and realigning to improve turning and sight distances
  • separated shared user path for cyclists and pedestrians to connect Mount Street and Ridgley.

In addition, several low-cost improvement opportunities are recommended including signage and line marking improvements and a review of the speed limit south of Ridgley.

Next steps

We will start work on the designs for the priority projects. As these projects progress, key stakeholders and the community will be consulted on the design of these projects.

Funding

The Tasmanian Government has contributed $6.8 million with a further $27.2 million from the Australian Government to upgrade the highway to improve safety and ride comfort for heavy vehicles and other road users.
