This strategy identifies and prioritises projects along the entire length of the West Tamar Highway from Launceston to Beauty Point to improve corridor performance and provide for future growth in the region.

West Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy - Launceston to Beauty Point

The strategy covers the whole length of the highway from Launceston to Beauty Point, building on a previous study that looked at the southern section of the highway between Launceston and Legana.

This new comprehensive plan provides an assessment of the highway and its ability to meet the current and expected needs of the region, including a list of improvement opportunities.

About the project

The West Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy – Launceston to Beauty Point project aims to provide a whole of corridor integrated plan that considers improvements to safety, road user experience, and meet the future transport demands for this growing region.

The key objectives were to identify and prioritise:

  • road safety improvements for all road users
  • opportunities for reducing congestion and improved travel times
  • efficiency and network reliability improvements.

Background

The West Tamar Highway is an important road connecting community, industry and visitors to the West Tamar region and delivering produce from the region to Launceston and the rest of the state.

We recently completed a road corridor study for the southern section of highway between the Launceston CBD and McEwans Road, north of Legana. You can find out more about this study here: West Tamar Highway Corridor Improvement Plan (PDF 1.8 MB).

We are now extending our corridor planning to the entire West Tamar Highway to incorporate the northern section from Legana to Beauty Point.

We are asking for your feedback to help us identify areas of the highway which require our attention. Your feedback will be used to develop the West Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy and will help inform our investigations and prioritise future projects

What is a corridor strategy?

We have been progressively preparing corridor strategies for State roads across Tasmania to create consistency in how the State Road Network is planned and managed.

Corridor strategies make planning and investment decisions transparent to the community, councils and other key stakeholders. By reviewing a variety of issues, a corridor study identifies:

  • ways to improve and encourage better transport and economic opportunities
  • current and future challenges in meeting region-specific objectives
  • key transport demands likely to be placed on the corridor over the next 30 years
  • high, medium and low priorities and actions to improve the corridor.
