Overview of restrictions

Approval for works or activities will be considered depending on the nature of the impact on traffic, the time of day and the day of week.

Whether a permit is issued will also depend on the type of road. For example, there are greater restrictions on when certain types of activity can be performed on key routes such as Macquarie Street, Davey Street and Brooker Avenue.  All State roads have been classified as Group A, B, C or D. Mapping of these classifications can be viewed below. Note while not shown on the mapping, the classifications also apply to interchange ramps.

A detailed explanation of what works can be considered for a permit at what times for each road group can be viewed here: Time restrictions on State Roads for works, temporary traffic management and events (PDF 261.9 KB).

Higher risk permit applications will have a more thorough assessment process, and additional permit conditions may be imposed if changes cannot be made to lower the risk rating.

We only assess permits for roads on the state road network. For works affecting roads managed by local government, please check with the relevant council.

1. Emergency works

If roadworks have to be done in response to emergency situations, they are permitted at any time.

If the works have to happen during busy periods, the contractor will do minimal work to make the site safe. Once the site is safe, the rest of the work will be done outside of peak times.

2. Exceptions

We may allow some works or activities outside these restrictions if:

  • traffic analysis shows that works will not impact traffic
  • the works are on a dual carriageway and are in the opposite direction to the peak traffic flow
  • they are scheduled during school holidays
  • other impact mitigation measures are in place
  • they are a part of large road upgrade projects that generally have different conditions and restrictions
  • they are established annual events and there is good stakeholder engagement in advance of the event.
