Coronavirus information
We're still open for business.
At State Growth, the health and safety of our staff, customers, and the wider-community remain our highest priority. Given the safety concerns some services have been reduced or suspended – Limited and suspended services.
We understand some customers may not wish or cannot attend a Service Tasmania shop. That’s why we’ve set-up this dedicated page as a one-stop shop of all the registration and licensing transactions that you can do online or electronically.
Several initiatives have been introduced to support the Tasmanian community:
Our most vulnerable licence holders
Licence holders 65 years of age and over whose licence is due for renewal from the 1 May until 31 October 2020 will automatically have their licence renewed for one year at no cost using existing photos. Drivers will receive their licence via the post prior to their licence expiring. Registration and Licensing will contact all licence holders impacted.
A risk based assessment of all medical fitness to drive requirements for licence holders has been undertaken. Where low to medium risk is identified the requirement to provide the assessment will be deferred for 6 months and where applicable conditions added to a drivers licence.
Licence holders with high risk conditions will still be required to provide a medical fitness to drive assessment.
State Growth will advise individuals if they are required to provide a medical fitness to drive assessment or have had conditions placed on their licence.
Renewal by BPay
All licences that expire on or after 1 June 2020 will have a BPAY payment option on the renewal form.
Do I have to renew my learners licence ?
If it expires between 1 April 2020 and 29 September 2020 the expiry date will be extended to 30 September 2020. If your learners licence expired prior to 1 April 2020 please contact Service Tasmania.
Assistance for isolated drivers
Drivers* who are isolated due to COVID 19 will be able to renew their licence or apply for a duplicate licence electronically for one year without the need to attend Service Tasmania. *Learner licence holders will only be able to obtain a duplicate.
This can be done electronically by completing an Out of State licence application without the need to provide a passport photo.
New to Tasmania - licence holders
New Tasmanian residents that have not transferred their interstate or overseas licence can apply to the Registrar of Motor vehicles for an exemption for up to six months from the three month requirement to transfer over their licence, if they are unable to attend a Service Tasmanian shop.
If a licence is expired or about to expire licence holders should contact the issuing jurisdiction for advice.
Supporting Businesses
To support significantly impacted Tasmanian small businesses, $9.75 million in business vehicle registration savings and deferrals is available. Under the Business vehicle relief package.
