Description and Requirements

Car

C

 

Any vehicle not more than 4.5 tonnes GVM and seating up to 12 adults including the driver.

Minimum age: 17

Light Rigid

LR

 

Any rigid vehicle, including a truck or bus, greater than 4.5 tonnes GVM but not more than 8 tonnes GVM, plus a trailer of no more than 9 tonnes GVM; or a bus seating more than 12 adults. Must have held a class C licence for 12 months.

Minimum age: 19

Medium Rigid

MR

 

Any rigid vehicle with 2 axles, including a truck or bus, greater than 8 tonnes GVM, plus a trailer of no more than 9 tonnes GVM. Must have held a class C licence for 12 months.

Minimum age: 19

Heavy Rigid

HR

 

Any rigid vehicle with 3 or more axles, including a truck or bus, greater than 8 tonnes GVM, plus a trailer of no more than 9 tonnes GVM; and an articulated bus.

Must have held a class C licence for 2 years and class LR/MR for 12 months, or satisfactorily completed an approved training course.

Minimum age: 20

Heavy Combination

HC

 

Any prime mover with a single semi-trailer, or heavy rigid vehicle plus a trailer greater than 9 tonnes GVM.

Must have held a MR or above for 12 months, or satisfactorily completed an approved training course.

Minimum age: 20

Multi Combination

MC

 

Any motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicle and trailer in this table. Must have held an HR or above licence for 12 months and satisfactorily completed an approved training course.

Minimum age: 21

 

Motorcycle*

R

 

Any 2 or 3 wheeled motor vehicle. Must satisfactorily complete all required training and assessments prior to receiving.

Minimum age: 17

Note:

  • Licence conditions may apply to any of the above licences.
  • You can only move to the next class of licence if you have attained the relevant age, necessary driving experience, and undertaken any required practical driving test or approved training course.
  • Exemptions can apply to the licence requirements (such as age requirements).
  • GVM – the maximum loaded mass of the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer on an identification plate on the vehicle or if there is no specification by the manufacturer as certified by a vehicle registration authority.

*The motorcycle licence class is not a part of the national hierarchy of licence classes.
