Important update

  • Note that from 1 November 2025, the experienced driver recognition category will cease. Licence holders from these countries will be required to pass a knowledge test on the Tasmanian Road Rules, a Hazard Perception Test, and a practical driving assessment to get a Tasmanian licence, regardless of their age.
  • Up to and including 31 October 2025, existing arrangements for transferring a licence from an experienced driver recognition country to a Tasmania licence will continue unchanged.

If you hold a current licence from any of the following countries, what you will need to do depends on your age.

Experienced Driver Recognition Countries:

  • Bulgaria
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Estonia
  • Hong Kong*
  • Hungary
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Poland
  • Republic of Korea (South Korea)
  • Romania
  • Serbia
  • Slovenia
  • Slovakia
  • South Africa
  • Taiwan
If you are: 
Under 25 years of age You will have to go to Service Tasmania with your evidence of identity, pass a knowledge test on the Tasmanian Road Rules (PDF 11.9 MB), an online Hazard Perception Test, and an overseas conversion driving assessment.
 
If you successfully complete these assessments, you will be issued a:
  • full licence if you have held your overseas licence for more than three years
  • P2 licence if you have held your overseas licence for less than three years but more than one year
  • P1 licence if you have held your overseas licence for less than a year.
Over 25 years of age You won’t have to undergo any testing*, and when you go to Service Tasmania with your current driver licence and evidence of identity you will be issued a:
  • full licence if you have held your licence for three or more years
  • P2 licence if you have held your overseas licence for less than three years but more than one year
  • P1 licence if you have held your overseas licence for less than a year.
*if you have held a Hong Kong licence for less than a year, you will have to pass a knowledge test on the Tasmanian Road Rules (PDF 11.9 MB), an online Hazard Perception Test, and an overseas conversion driving assessment. You can practice the driver knowledge test on our website.
