Launceston Transit Centre relocation (PDF)

Metro, Manions’, Tassielink, and Redline (Kinetic) East Tamar services continue to operate from the Launceston interchange in St John Street and Brisbane Street.

The Tasmanian Government is working to secure a long term location for Intercity, St Helens and Mole Creek services.

1Which routes were affected?

Redline (Kinetic)

  • Devonport Launceston route 705
  • Hobart to Launceston routes 700, 702
  • Mole Creek to Launceston route 762

Calow’s Coaches

  • St Helens to Launceston route 740

2Where exactly are the new stops?

Charles Street, between William Street and Cimitere Street, on the Harvey Norman side of the street.

3What amenity is available at Charles Street at William Street?

At the Charles Street at William Street stop,

  • public toilets are available at the Civic Centre on Charles Street, approximately 200m away
  • there is a shelter
  • Redline (Kinetic) staff are present to support arrivals and departures
  • the Launceston Interchange, St John Street, is approximately 450m away.

4Can I still buy tickets using cash at the bus stop?

Yes, staff will be at the stop before scheduled departures to sell tickets and assist with luggage and boarding.

5Where can I leave my bags?

Customers are responsible for coordinating private luggage storage. Consider requesting to leave luggage at accommodation or seek advice from the Launceston Visitor Information Centre at 68-72 Cameron Street or by calling 1800 651 827.

6Did timetables change?

No, arrival and departure times for services to/from Charles Street at William Street are the same as Cornwall Square Transit Centre.

7Why Charles Street at William Street?

Charles Street at William Street has been selected in consultation between the Department of State Growth, City of Launceston, and bus operators.

The Charles Street site offers enough kerb space for buses, is close to toilets, and has room for other customer amenities like a shelter. Other sites identified to date do not meet these criteria.

The Tasmanian Government is working to secure a long term location for Intercity and East Coast services.

8Why did services move?

The Cornwall Square Transit Centre is privately owned, and services relocated at the site owners request.

9Why can’t services relocate to the Launceston Interchange?

The long distance coach services affected by the Cornwall Square Transit Centre closure require large amounts of kerb space for extended periods as passengers board and coordinate luggage. This space is not available at the Launceston Interchange, St John’s Street and Brisbane Street, which is used by other urban and Greater Launceston bus services.

10Did fares change?

No, the relocation did not affect fares.

11Did this affect other services or the Launceston interchange?

No, the change did not affect Metro, Tassielink, Manions’, or Redline (Kinetic) East Tamar services operated from St John Street or Brisbane Street.
