About the project
We will develop concept designs for upgrades at several road junctions across rural Tasmania.
We have selected and prioritised these junctions based on their potential for low-cost upgrades, with many of these junctions already having features that will allow for improvements with minimal impacts to road users.
We will be developing a concept design for each of these junctions, focusing on improving the movement of traffic and safety for all road users. Currently, the funding for this program may only enable some of the sites to progress to detailed design and construction
The concept designs will be used to help support future funding applications to try and progress all of the junctions to detailed design and construction.
Identified junction sites
- Colebrook Road/Fingerpost Road, north of Richmond
- Frankford Road/Bakers Beach Road, east of Harford
- Meander Valley Road/Westwood Road, west of Hadspen
- Meander Valley Road/Travellers Drive (Travellers Rest)
- Ridgley Highway/Cascade Road, south of Burnie
- Tasman Highway/Brinktop Road, north of Sorell (This project is currently in design)
- West Tamar Highway/Craythorne Road, Grindelwald (is opposite Waldhorn)
- West Tamar Highway/Waldhorn Drive, Grindelwald (is opposite Craythorne)
- Zeehan Highway/Anthony Main Road, north of Queenstown
- Zeehan Highway/Lyell Highway, north of Queenstown

Timing
From April 2026, we will be visiting each junction to gather information and collect data to help develop these concept designs. The site visits will not impact traffic.
About the program
This program was created as a result of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment under the Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-2024 and aims to make Tasmania’s rural roads safer.
The development of the junction concept designs is being funded by the Tasmanian Government’s Road Safety Levy.
1. Road Safety Junction Upgrades Program FAQs
What is the project?
The Department of State Growth is seeking to develop concept designs for junction upgrades at several road junctions across Tasmania’s rural road network.
How is the project being funded?
The project is being funded by the Tasmanian Government’s Road Safety Levy.
What stage is the project currently in?
The project is currently in the concept design stage.
Concept design is the earliest stage of the design process and involves developing the basic design of a project.
These concept designs will be used to support future funding applications for the detailed design and construction phases of the junction upgrades.
What stage is next?
Currently, the funding for this program may only enable some of the sites to progress to detailed design and construction.
Once we have completed concept designs for each of these junctions, the most important and high priority sites will proceed to the detailed design stage. We will be in contact with stakeholders to inform them if a junction close to them is proceeding to this stage.
Where will the project take place?
Concept designs will be developed for the following junctions:
- Colebrook Road/Fingerpost Road, north of Richmond
- West Tamar Highway/Craythorne Road, Grindelwald (is opposite Waldhorn Dr)
- West Tamar Highway/Waldhorn Drive, Grindelwald (is opposite Craythorne Rd)
- Meander Valley Road/Travellers Drive, Travellers Rest
- Meander Valley Road/Westwood Road, west of Hadspen
- Frankford Road/Bakers Beach Road, east of Harford
- Ridgley Highway/Cascade Road, south of Burnie
- Tasman Highway/Brinktop Road, north of Sorell (this junction is currently in detailed design)
- Zeehan Highway/Lyell Highway, north of Queenstown
- Zeehan Highway/Anthony Road, north of Queenstown.
Why these junctions?
These junctions have been selected based on their potential for low cost upgrades, with many of these junctions already having features that will allow for improvements with minimal disruption to road users.
Why is the Tasman Highway/Brinktop Road in design?
This junction was selected to have full funding for design and construction because of safety concerns with road users turning off from the Tasman Highway. Traffic in the Sorell area continues to grow, so it was decided that this project would proceed first to upgrade the turning area to give drivers more space and clearer separation from highway traffic.
Who are you communicating with?
We will be communicating with nearby landowners and bus operators, to help identify how we can improve each junction. We will also be notifying councils of the project.
How will the work affect me?
From April 2026, the project team will be visiting junctions to gather information that will help develop concept designs. During these investigations there will be no traffic impacts or changes for road users.
How can I stay informed or ask questions?
To contact the project team, provide feedback about the junctions, or ask to be kept informed as the project progresses, please contact us by: phone: 03 6165 0443 email: roadsafetyjunctions@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
