About the project

We are constructing a new park and ride facility between Fenton Street and the Tasman Highway, Midway Point.

We are also doing landscaping work next to the Midway Point Tavern, on the corner of Penna Road and the Tasman Highway, Midway Point.

The park and ride facility will offer commuters free parking and access to future express bus services into Hobart’s CBD, with connections to active transport routes for walking, wheeling or riding.

Park and ride facilities provide opportunities for public transport users to cycle, walk, or travel by car to a facility with dedicated commuter parking close to key bus routes. Local shared user paths will also connect to the facility.

Secure bicycle storage will be available at the Midway Point park and ride, along with:

  • five motorcycle spaces
  • two accessible car spaces
  • 59 car spaces
  • 61 standard car spaces in total.

All-weather bus shelters will be constructed as part of the development at the existing bus stop on Penna Road and Hobart-bound bus stop on the Tasman Highway.

Planned work

Work began on Monday, 12 May 2025 and we expect to complete the work in October 2025.

We will be working between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday and occasionally between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm Saturday. We will let you know if we need to work outside these times.

A reduced speed on Fenton Street will be in place for the duration of the works. Please allow for changed traffic conditions and for everyone’s safety, follow the speed limit and directions of traffic controllers.

Timing

Construction began in May 2025, and we expect to complete the work in October 2025.

Community consultation

Community consultation on the concept design for the Claremont, Midway Point and Rokeby park and ride facilities was completed in 2022.

Members of the community provided their feedback on the concept designs by leaving comments and feedback on an online interactive map, in-person at a display venue in each of the local areas, by phone, and by email. Designs were available to view at 18 locations.

FAQs

What are the benefits of park and ride facilities?

Park and ride facilities provide opportunities for public transport users to cycle, walk, or travel by car to a facility with dedicated commuter parking close to key bus routes. Local shared user paths will also connect to the facility.

What features do park and ride facilities have?

  • parking for vehicles and motorcycles
  • secure bicycle storage
  • all-weather bus shelters and timetable information

The safety features include:

  • lighting for car parks, bus shelters and along footpaths
  • car parks designed to reduce anti-social motor vehicle usage
  • bollards and barriers near bus shelters and paths.

We will also be installing the infrastructure ready for future CCTV monitoring. We will provide an update on CCTV monitoring as the information becomes available.

Will the park and ride facility have fences?

Generally, the park and ride facilities will be contained by:

  • local roads and streets
  • shared paths
  • some landscaping
  • bus stops.

The site in Midway Point has existing fences between nearby properties and the vacant land. Fences in these areas will be retained or reinstated where needed.

Will the park and ride facility have gates?

No. The facility will be open 24/7 and the car park entrances will not have gates.

What will happen to bus routes and services?

The park and ride facility locations have been selected as they are close to existing bus routes. Where possible, bus routes will be diverted into the park and ride facility. Where this is not possible, passengers may need to walk a short distance from their vehicle to their bus stop (or vice versa).

Our Passenger Transport Branch will work with bus operators to review timetables and make adjustments where required to better cater to passenger demand. To share feedback on passenger transport experiences, you can email ptfeedback@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
