Planning and design is underway to upgrade the Tasman Highway between the Airport Interchange and Midway Point Causeway.

The highway will be upgraded to be two lanes in each direction, separated by a central flexible safety barrier. We will also build traffic signals at Pittwater Road, and a new shared walking and cycling path.

The project will also provide safer access to Pittwater Road, the Tasmanian Golf Club and Barilla Bay Oysters.

Impacts to the local environment, businesses and community recreation are being carefully considered. The area also includes a threatened species protected by the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act (EPBC Act).

Next Steps

We are working with landowners and the Australian Government to complete a design that balances the needs of these important stakeholders, road safety and minimises environmental impacts.

When we have a new draft design, we will share it with the community.

Timing

Construction on this project is expected to start during 2025 but can only happen once EPBC Act approvals are obtained.

Consultation

In mid-2019 we asked the community for their feedback on options for Hobart Airport to Midway Point Causeway project, as well as the Midway Point Intersection Solution and Sorell Southern Bypass.

The first consultation period closed on 28 June 2019. You can view a summary of all the feedback received: Consultation Summary - South East Traffic Solution 2019

After that consultation, we reviewed the community feedback and worked with key stakeholders to draft a revised design for the Hobart Airport to Midway Point Causeway project.

The design was available for public comment in December 2019.

You can view the consultation report for this project here: Hobart Airport Interchange to Midway Point Causeway Stakeholder and Community Feedback Report.

More information, including key issues raised during the consultation and our response, is in the Project Update (DOCX 1.2 MB).
