About the strategy

The Devonport to Cradle Mountain Road Improvement Strategy provides an assessment of the road corridor between Devonport and Cradle Mountain, with the government commitment being to focus on the area from the Bass Highway at Devonport to Cradle Mountain.

We developed the strategy to:

  • identify and investigate opportunities for road improvements along the corridor that meet the current and future expected needs of local communities and tourism activity in the region
  • engage with a range of stakeholders including tourists, businesses, local communities, and government authorities to  gain a better understanding of how the road is currently used, the local environment and road user experiences
  • make sure that future improvements through this corridor will give all road users a safe and reliable journey to Cradle Mountain.

Implementing the strategy will require careful consideration of planning, environmental and design requirements, as well as close consultation with land managers, businesses, tourism operators and the community to reduce impacts on the environment, park users and the visitor economy.

Background

Cradle Mountain as a destination received approximately 280,000 tourists in 2017-18, and current forecast shows that visitor numbers will continue to increase to reach 300,000 in the coming years.

The strategy is an evidence-based strategy developed to assess and address current and future transport needs of the area. The plan will also support the Tasmanian Government’s plan to grow the visitation to this important tourist destination.

As of November 2024, the Australian and Tasmanian Governments have committed $31.25 million dollars     to deliver targeted improvements along the route between Devonport and the Cradle Mountain Lake-St Clair National Park.

An addendum was recently added to the strategy after opportunities were identified to strengthen and rebuild the southern section of Cradle Mountain Road/Dove Lake Road, between the Cradle Mountain Interpretation Centre and Dove Lake. This future work would improve the longevity and reliability of this stretch of road.

The addendum assesses the current context and condition of the Cradle Mountain Road/Dove Lake Road section and examines how the existing road can be improved and strengthened to create a better experience for those who currently use this road.

Community consultation

Community consultation for the strategy began on Friday, 17 March 2023 and closed on Sunday, 30 April 2023. In-person community consultation sessions were held in March 2023.

The project team spoke with visitors, businesses, and the local community to understand their experiences of using the roads.

We completed our analysis of the feedback received and we have produced a summary report highlighting the findings from the community. You can download the report below.

This feedback will assist our project team in understanding the opportunities for improvements and future developments on this road.

We will be consulting stakeholders during the development of any upgrade projects that have been identified in the strategy. We will engage with land managers, businesses, tourism operators and the community to understand how this project may affect them, and how impacts on the environment, park users and the visitor economy can be reduced.

Funding

As of November 2024, the Australian and Tasmanian Governments have committed $31.25 million dollars to deliver targeted improvements along the route between Devonport and the Cradle Mountain Lake-St Clair National Park.
