About the project

Tasmania’s legislative framework for road management is complicated and out-dated, and no longer suits the needs of road managers. Overly complex legislation makes it hard to deliver an efficient modern transport network.

The Tasmanian Government’s Road Management Legislation Review (the Review) is a review of the state’s framework of road management legislation. We expect this review to result in major amendments to, or replacement of, the Roads and Jetties Act 1935, which deals with state roads. We will also consider the possibility of consolidating legislation for both state and local (council-owned) roads.

The Review will:

  • modernise the framework to make it easier to manage
  • clarify responsibility for road management functions
  • cut red tape for road management
  • provide for the future of Tasmania’s roads, including for alternative and emerging transport modes.

Road user legislation, which deals with things like registration, licensing, road safety and public transport, is not part of the Review.

State Growth is now considering the feedback and working to develop options for a new framework, including by consulting directly with key stakeholders.

The next phase of formal consultation has been delayed and is now expected to occur in mid-2025. Some targeted engagement is planned to occur before then, and parties with an interest in the review are welcome to contact the project team with any questions or ideas by emailing rmlr@stategrowth.tas.gov.au.
