How do I get my non-novice learner licence?

To get your licence as a non-novice motorcycle learner, you’ll need to:

  • be at least 16 years and 6 months
  • learn the Tasmanian Road Rules and pass the Motorcycle Road Rules test at Service Tasmania
  • complete an application and apply for a non-novice motorcycle learner licence.

What conditions apply to non-novice motorcycle learners?

  • carry your licence
  • have a zero blood alcohol content
  • clearly show L-plate at the rear of the motorcycle
  • don’t travel faster than 80km/h at any time, even when a higher speed limit applies
  • only ride a Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) motorcycle (NSW Government PDF)
  • only carry a pillion passenger if that person has held a motorcycle licence for at least 3 years and is riding pillion in order to instruct you
  • wear an approved motorcycle helmet
  • sit astride the seat and face forwards
  • have at least one hand on the handlebars
  • have your feet on the footrests (unless the motorcycle is stopped)
  • don’t ride more than two abreast within 1 lane.

How do I progress to a full motorcycle licence?

To progress to your full licence you must:

  • be at least 17 years of age and have held a motorcycle learner licence
  • wait at least 28 days after your non-novice learner licence was issued, undertake the Pre-provisional course with Stay Upright.

After successfully completing the Pre-provisional course, take your Certificate of Competence and evidence of identity to Service Tasmania. After paying the licence fee, you will be issued with a full licence.
