1How do I get my non-novice learner licence?

To get your licence as a non-novice motorcycle learner, you’ll need to:

  • be at least 16 years and 6 months,
  • learn the Tasmanian Road Rules and pass the Motorcycle Road Rules test at Service Tasmania,
  • undertake day 2 of the Pre-Learner Motorcycle course
  • wait at least 28 days after your pre-learner course, attend a check ride with AJL Training
  • wait at least 28 days after your Check ride, undertake the Pre-Provisional Test with AJL Training Service Tasmania, where you’ll receive temporary Provisional licence (after paying a licence fee).

You can then take your Certificate of Competence (if applicable) and evidence of identity to Service Tasmania, where you’ll receive temporary licence, until your photo licence is posted to you (after paying a licence fee).

2What conditions apply to non-novice motorcycle learners?

  • Carry your licence
  • Have a zero blood alcohol content
  • Clearly show L-plate at the rear of the motorcycle
  • Don’t travel faster than 80km/h at any time, even when a higher speed limit applies
  • Only ride a Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) motorcycle
  • Only carry a pillion passenger if that person has held a motorcycle licence for at least 3 years and is riding pillion in order to instruct you
  • Wear an approved motorcycle helmet
  • Sit astride the seat and face forwards
  • Have at least one hand on the handlebars
  • Have your feet on the footrests (unless the motorcycle is stopped)
  • Don’t ride more than two abreast within 1 lane

3How do I progress to a full motorcycle licence?

To progress to your full licence you must:

Attend Service Tasmania with full identification (EOI) evidence of identity , where you’ll receive temporary licence before you receive your photo licence in the mail (after paying a licence fee).
