What motorcycle learner licence do I need to get?

There are two ways to get your motorcycle licence. Which learner licence you will need depends on whether you’ve had a motorcycle licence in the past:

1Novice learner

You’re a novice learner if you haven’t held a motorcycle licence before. This means that you’ll have to get your motorcycle Ls and Ps before you can get a full motor cycle licence.

2Non-novice learner

To get your licence as a non-novice motorcycle learner, you’ll need to:

  • learn the Tasmanian Road Rules and pass the Motorcycle Road Rules test at Service Tasmania,
  • undertake day 2 of the Pre Learner Motorcycle course
  • wait at least 28 days after your pre-learner course, attend a check ride with AJL Training
  • wait at least 28 days after your Check ride, undertake the Pre-Provisional Test with AJL Training Service. If successful you will need to attend a Service Tasmania shop to pay the licence fee to upgrade your motorcycle licence

Attend Service Tasmania with full Identification (EOI) evidence of identity, where you’ll receive temporary licence, before you receive your photo licence in the mail (after paying a licence fee).
