  • Unless exempt by legislation vehicles must be registered for use on a public street in Tasmania
  • Everyone must register their vehicle in Tasmania within 3 months of entering Tasmania. EXCEPT non-Tasmanian residents in respect of vehicles not being used for a commercial purpose.
  • Interstate registered vehicles must be covered by a valid third party insurance policy such as MAIB or the equivalent third party insurance policy of another Australian jurisdiction.
  • If the vehicles use is prohibited by a registration authority or suspended this also applies in Tasmania.
  • If the seller surrenders the plates or the vehicle is unregistered you will have to purchase A short term unregistered vehicle permit in the state or territory where the journey begins or arrange for the vehicle to be transported to Tasmania.
  • A vehicle registration cannot be transferred or established to a person/company/body corporate who resides interstate, unless the person/company/body corporate who resides interstate has a garage address in Tasmania and can provide proof of that garage address.
