Vehicle registration - general information
The registered operator is the person/s or entity recorded on the vehicle registration certificate as being responsible for a vehicle.
This can be individual/s, a Company, incorporated association and Co-operative or Mutual Enterprise.
The name of a business cannot be recorded as the registered operator of a vehicle, however the individual trading under a business name, can register themselves as the registered operator.
Being recorded as a registered operator does not prove ownership of a vehicle. If ownership is disputed please seek legal advice.
Transfer of vehicle registration requires payment of the transfer fee.
Duty payment is also required and collected on behalf of the Department of Treasury and Finance State Revenue office.
Some duty exemptions apply.
Some vehicles and types of registration are non-transferable, including Special Interest Vehicle Registration and some Conditional Restricted Use registered vehicle.
Non-transferable includes transfers from single to joint, or joint to single operators.
If a vehicle is non-transferable the registration must cancelled (if applicable) and the registration established to the new single or joint operator.

When disputes regarding vehicle ownership arise, the complainant is encouraged to seek legal advice or consult with Tasmania Police.
