1. Which vehicles are eligible for Club Event Registration?

All vehicles must meet roadworthiness standards and stay in good condition. They also need to comply with relevant vehicle standards. Heavy vehicles are considered for Club Event Registration.

Vintage vehicles must be:

  • manufactured 30 years before the application, or
  • a replica of a body and frame manufactured at least 30 years ago.

Street Rod vehicles must:

  • be a light vehicle
  • have a body and frame made before 1949 or a replica of a body or frame of a vehicle made before 1949, or a vehicle made before 1949.
  • Be modified (and modifications certified where applicable and recognised by Tasmania)

Vehicles also considered for Street Rod registration are:

  • vehicles defined by the Australian Street Rod Federation (ASRF) as a custom class
  • that are a light vehicle
  • and has a body or frame manufactured between 1949 and 1965 inclusive
  • modified (and modifications certified where applicable and recognised by Tasmania)

2. What are the requirements for Club Event Registration?

  • The vehicle is a vintage car (30 years old or more, or a replica) or a Street Rod vehicle.
  • The registered operator is a member of a recognised car club.
  • The vehicle meets and is maintained to relevant roadworthiness and vehicle standards.
  • The vehicle can only be used for:
  • travelling to, from, and within Club Events to which you are a member, and,
  • a maximum of 30 days outside of Club Events within each 12-month period
  • The vehicle cannot:
  • be used for hire or reward or provide a Passenger Transport Service.
  • carry a load. Except for items associated with a Club Event or general light goods (e.g. machinery, display material, supplies).
  • tow a vehicle. Other than a caravan being used to attend a Club Event or a 'period' caravan that is for display at an event.

3. How do I apply for Club Event Registration?

  1. Have your vehicle inspected by your recognised car clubs official and obtain a signed declaration. The declaration must include the:
    • vehicles chassis number or VIN,
    • the vehicles engine number,
    • a statement that the vehicle is in roadworthy condition and,
    • confirmation that you are a current member of their recognised car club.
  2. Visit Service Tasmania with the following:
    • Completed Vintage & Street Rod (Club Event) Application for Registration (MR196)
    • The declaration signed by the recognised car club official.
    • Your Tasmanian licence or evidence of identity
    • Proof of entitlement (such as purchase receipt)

If the vehicle holds another form of registration, you can cancel the registration by surrendering the number plates at Service Tasmania. Then, follow the steps above.

If the vehicle currently displays Tasmanian issued VC or ROD plates, these can remain on the vehicle and new plates don’t need to be issued.

Service Tasmania will provide to you:

  • Certificate of registration
  • Certificate of Approved Operations (conditions of registration)
  • Logbook
  • Registration number plates to affix to the vehicle (if required):
    • white and blue ‘VC’ plates for vintage vehicles
    • black and white ‘ROD’ plates for street rods and ASRF custom class.

4. What conditions of registration apply to the vehicle?

If you get Club Event registration, the following conditions apply:

Must only be used in conjunction with an authorised Club Event.
MS17Can be used for Club Event and 30 other days maximum.
MS16Vehicle may be driven to and from a place for the purpose of repairs and maintenance.
OL4Registered operator must be a current member of an authorised car club.
SI1Special Interest and Club Event Vehicle logbook must be carried in the vehicle at all times and be completed before the start of each days journey.

5. When do I record my journey details?

To track vehicle use, complete the logbook whenever you use the vehicle outside of Club Events.

You don't need to log journey details when driving to, from, or within Club Events you're a member of. This also applies when you're going for repairs or maintenance.

The logbook is provided to you at the time of acquiring registration.

6. How do I renew a Club Event registered vehicle?

To ensure ongoing eligibility to Club Event registration, each time the registration is renewed, you must provide proof of membership to a recognised car club.

  • Renew in person at Service Tasmania:

You must provide proof of membership at the time you are renewing the registration.

  • Renew using, MyServiceTas, Bpay, Australia Post, direct debit and online renewal service:

Make payment using one of the options provided above and email your ‘proof of membership’ to R&LSCommunication@stategrowth.tas.gov.au

If you do not provide your membership within 2 weeks of making the renewal payment, your registration may not be renewed and payment returned to the original payment method.

  • You are unable to renew the registration using the ‘over the phone’ option and renewal can be made using the options above.

Proof of membership includes:

  • A current membership card to the vintage car club, or
  • A declaration signed by the club official confirming that you are a current member of their club.

For recognised car clubs - If the vehicle is registered in the name of a recognised car club, you don’t need to provide proof of membership when you renew.

7. How do I transfer registration of a Club Event Registered vehicle?

You can transfer Vintage & Street Rod (Club Event) registration. The conditions applied to the registration remain when transferred.

You don’t need to provide proof of membership to a vintage car club at this time. But you will be required to provide this at the time of renewal.

A transfer of registration can happen if the vehicle is currently registered or has been unregistered for less than 3 months. If the vehicle hasn’t been unregistered for over 3 months, you can’t transfer the registration. Instead, you will need to apply for Club Event registration.

8. I have sold my Club Event Registered vehicle, what do I need to do?

If you have sold a vehicle with Club Event registration, you must submit a ‘notice a disposal’. Please see ‘Selling your vehicle’ for more information.

9. How do I change from Club Event Registration to standard registration?

To change from Club Event registration to standard registration, you will need to:

  1. Return the registration plates to Service Tasmania and cancel your Cub Event registration.
  2. Follow the steps in ‘Standard Registration’

10. Can I affix personalised plates to my Club Event Registered vehicle?

A vehicle registered with Club Event Registration must show ‘VC’ or ‘ROD’ plates. You received these plates when you acquired registration. You cannot affix personalised plates to your Club Event registered vehicle.

11. What is the purpose of Vintage & Street Rod (Club Event) registration?

Vintage and Street Rod (Club Event) registration is a type of conditional registration.

Its purpose is to allow car enthusiasts to enjoy and drive their vintage vehicles. Where, without this registration option, many vintage vehicles would remain garaged and unused.

Due to limits on Club Event vehicles, registration fees have lower Motor Accident and Insurance Board (MAIB) fees. They are also exempt from motor tax and duty payments.

12. Which car clubs are recognised?

We don’t currently publish a list of recognised car clubs. Please reach out to the car club you belong to or want to join. Ask them if they are a recognised car club for Club Event Registration.

13. How do I apply to be a recognised car club?

To become a recognised car club, you must apply to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

To apply, email the following information and documentation to vehicle.registration@stategrowth.tas.gov.au

  • Your club’s constitution
  • Dates of at least 2/3 of the venues of scheduled rallies.
  • A nominated car club member to control the use of the club’s membership
  • A procedure for approving rallies
  • Name and address of nominated scrutineers
  • A procedure for internal discipline
  • A sample of the club’s roadworthy inspection declaration.
