We identified a program of upgrades for the Bass Highway between Cooee and Wynyard as part of the Cooee to Wynyard Planning Study

This program will increase traffic flow, improve safety, and extend the life of road infrastructure. It will be delivered between 2020 and 2025.

We will work closely with Waratah-Wynyard Council and Burnie City Councils to ensure connection and coordination with other projects in the area.

The road projects in the program will include provision for cycling infrastructure. This is part of our policy to support a shift to more sustainable transport modes.

1About the program

The program includes the below package of works:

Traffic flow improvements

  • Overtaking lanes between Somerset and Wynyard.
  • Optimisation of the timing and connection of existing traffic signals to support current traffic patterns.

Safety improvements

  • Realignment of the Bass Highway between Somerset and Wynyard to make sharp corners safer and provide new overtaking lanes, including a median strip with safety barrier.
  • Traffic signals at the intersection of the Murchison and Bass highways to provide safer turns at this location.
  • Seven new/improved pedestrian crossings between Cooee and Somerset.
  • Four new speed advisory signs have been installed between Somerset and Wynyard on corners and bends to improve safety and traffic flow.
  • A speed limit review for Cooee and Somerset will be conducted and the decision communicated to the community.

Asset reliability improvements

  • Replacement of the Cam River Bridge to ensure reliability during flood events.
  • Upgrades to retaining structures supporting the Bass Highway and proposed shared-use North West Coastal Pathway to prevent erosion (this is subject to further analysis and coordination with North West Coastal Pathway project).
