Approved applications received between 15 November 2018 and 24 December 2018 will be processed and mailed in early January 2019. Applications received after 7 January 2019 may take up to 4 weeks to process.
Student Bus Fares
Students who travel on a bus service may be eligible for student concession fares. Further information relating to child and student fares, discounted student fare ticketing, special circumstance bus passes and more, is available on the Student Bus Fares page.
In certain circumstances students may be eligible to travel for free to and from school. For more information on free travel, or to apply, see below.
Free travel is available to students who meet the eligibility criteria. If you would like to see if you are eligible please refer to the guidelines or you can find more information on the Free travel bus pass page.
New or renewal student bus pass for free travel
The fastest way to apply for or renew an expired Student bus pass for free travel is online. Complete the online application form.
After you have applied:
- All applications can take up to four weeks to process.
- The applicant will receive a letter from Passenger Transport to advise them of the outcome of the application.
- Until a letter is received to advise if free travel eligibility has been approved, the student will be required to pay a fare when travelling on the bus.
Replacement student bus pass for free travel
If you travel on Metro or Tassielink only
If your Student Greencard for free travel has been lost, stolen or damaged you will need to contact Metro on 132201, attend a Metro office or online at metrotas.com.au to arrange for a replacement Greencard. The replacement fee is $5.00. If your card has stopped working through no fault of your own, you will need to visit a Metro office to have the card tested. If found to be faulty it will be replaced at no cost.
For all other bus operators including Merseylink
If your Student bus pass for free travel has been lost, stolen or damaged (other than Metro or Tassielink) you must pay a replacement fee of $11.00.
If your card has stopped working through no fault of your own, you will need to visit a Service Tasmania store to complete a replacement form and surrender your existing card. No fee will be charged under these circumstances.
The fastest way to replace a lost, stolen or damaged pass is by completing the online replacement application form, and paying the $11.00 fee online by Visa or Mastercard. Note that a receipt endorsed as a temporary pass valid for free travel for 4 weeks may be printed or forwarded to an email address for later printing upon completion of the application.
Alternatively you can download a Replacement student bus pass for free travel application form and visit a Service Tasmania shop to pay the $11.00 fee by cash, or debit/credit card. Paper applications are also available at Service Tasmania. Note that a receipt endorsed as a temporary pass valid for 4 weeks of free travel on the nominated operator/s will be issued by Service Tasmania.
After you have applied:
- Applications can take up to four weeks to process.
- The applicant will receive a new card in the post once the application has been processed.
A Special circumstance adult student bus pass allows adult senior secondary students who study full time to travel at the child student fare if they meet the eligibility criteria. In some cases adult students may be eligible for free travel.

To apply for a Special Circumstance student bus pass you, or your education provider, will need to download and complete the Special circumstance adult student bus pass application form and guidelines (PDF, 117.4 KB)
- Special Circumstance applications must be endorsed by the education provider and a letter of support must also be provided at the time of submitting the application.
- All Special Circumstance student bus pass applications can take up to four weeks to process.
Conveyance Allowance is a payment made to eligible families to help with part of the cost to transport their child from home, to their school or bus stop, by private car. It may also be paid to eligible families to help with the cost of air travel from the Bass Strait Islands to a school or college on mainland Tasmania or Australia.

To notify the Department of State Growth of a change of details (for example a change of address, bank account or school enrolment), download and complete the Conveyance Allowance Change of Details form.
